Our Yarra

Our Vision

The Yarra River

The long-term goals for rivers and creeks in the Port Phillip and Westernport region, including the Yarra catchment, are:

  • Healthy rivers and creeks, with increased numbers of native fish, platypus and plants.
  • Our rivers will continue to be a hub for recreation and our communities will actively participate in improving their condition.
  • By 2025, all natural rivers and creeks will be in good or better condition.

Melbourne Water is responsible for:

  • improving the health of Melbourne's rivers and streams across rural and urban environments
  • releasing environmental flows from reservoirs, monitoring the health and water quality of rivers and creeks
  • monitoring the health and water quality of rivers and creeks
  • licensing and managing diverters who draw water from catchments

In protecting and improving Melbourne's rivers and creeks, the main objectives are to:

  • Achieve significant improvements in waterway health by managing environmental flows and undertaking improvement works
  • Reduce nitrogen inputs to Port Phillip Bay from the stormwater system by 100 tonnes a year by 2010 through the construction of wetlands
  • Work with the community and key stakeholders to protect and improve our waterways.
