Our Vision
The long-term goals for rivers and creeks in the Port Phillip and Westernport region, including the Yarra catchment, are:
- Healthy rivers and creeks, with increased numbers of native fish, platypus and plants.
- Our rivers will continue to be a hub for recreation and our communities will actively participate in improving their condition.
- By 2025, all natural rivers and creeks will be in good or better condition.
Melbourne Water is responsible for:
- improving the health of Melbourne's rivers and streams across rural and urban environments
- releasing environmental flows from reservoirs, monitoring the health and water quality of rivers and creeks
- monitoring the health and water quality of rivers and creeks
- licensing and managing diverters who draw water from catchments
In protecting and improving Melbourne's rivers and creeks, the main objectives are to:
- Achieve significant improvements in waterway health by managing environmental flows and undertaking improvement works
- Reduce nitrogen inputs to Port Phillip Bay from the stormwater system by 100 tonnes a year by 2010 through the construction of wetlands
- Work with the community and key stakeholders to protect and improve our waterways.
